Course Overview

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a significant civil rights law enacted in 1990. It prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in various areas of public life, including employment, public services, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications. Several key federal acts complement and relate to the ADA, including the Rehabilitation Act, ADA Amendments Act, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensuring protection, accessibility, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

Just a decade ago, diagnoses such as HIV and cancer often indicated terminal illnesses. Advances in medical treatment now allow these conditions to be managed like chronic diseases, enabling individuals to live longer while addressing ongoing symptoms, some of which may result in disability. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted to provide protections for individuals with disabilities, particularly in the context of employment.

This course examines ADA coverage for those affected by cancer and HIV, as well as its application to the newly recognized chronic disease of long COVID.
