Course Overview

Addiction represents a significant challenge in contemporary society. The opioid crisis, marked by increasing overdose fatalities, has contributed to the rise of heroin and fentanyl use, intensifying the substance abuse epidemic. However, substance-related disorders are only one facet of the broader issue.

Behavioral addictions have not received as much scholarly attention or research as substance addictions. While behavioral addictions typically do not result in mortality as frequently as drug addiction, there is growing concern regarding their impact, particularly technology-related behaviors. Activities such as video gaming, social media usage, and prolonged screen time have become pervasive, with some evidence suggesting severe consequences, including increased mortality risk among adolescents affected by social media addiction.
 
This course will examine both types of addiction, explore their similarities, and discuss ongoing debates around the classification of behavioral addictions.

  2. List the DSM-5 criteria for substance abuse or drug abuse.

  3. Explain the cycle of drug abuse, including diagnosis and treatment.

  4. Present some behavioral addictions and their effect on the brain.
