Course Overview
This course will cover the HIPAA law, including the privacy and security rules, as well as the exemption for Workers' Compensation. It will also discuss the final rule for the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects, known as The Common Rule, which took effect in January 2019. The rise of social media and telemedicine has raised new questions regarding privacy and confidentiality.
The course will outline HIPAA requirements for portable devices and highlight that HIPAA rules remain in effect during epidemics, such as the opioid crisis, and pandemic situations like COVID-19. Recent changes and guidelines issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) regarding the application of the HIPAA Privacy Rule to disclosures about COVID-19 vaccination status will also be included.
New updates to the HIPAA Privacy Rule aim to normalize the definition of electronic health records, clarify privacy practices, provide transparency regarding access fees, and reaffirm individuals' access rights. Notably, the 2024 HIPAA updates include two significant changes concerning telemedicine and exceptions made during the pandemic, as well as modifications to strengthen reproductive healthcare privacy. With the increasing popularity of home offices, compliance with HIPAA regulations in these settings is essential.
