Course Overview

This course will familiarize students with basic ethical principles and theories, presenting a six-step guide for ethical decision-making to address various issues. It will also cover the Codes of Conduct for CDMS, CRC, CCM, and Addiction Professionals, focusing on common ethical dilemmas such as conflicts of interest, dual relationships, and confidentiality in these specific areas of practice.
 
The COVID-19 pandemic has raised several ethical questions for healthcare professionals, and some of these issues will be discussed. After a year of managing the pandemic, the challenges faced by medical professionals will also be explored. Autonomy serves as the foundation of Western medical ethics, along with the concept of informed consent. The legalization of physician-assisted suicide in many states presents additional ethical dilemmas for healthcare providers, which will also be addressed in this course.


Course Objectives

  1. Describe the four major ethical principles and key ethical theories.

  2. Present ethical considerations, including veracity, fidelity, the slippery slope, and double effect.

  3. Explain the ethical theory of utilitarianism, including the benefit-burden ratio and paternalism.

  4. List the six steps in the ethical decision-making model and practice these steps using the provided case study.

  5. Contrast moral, ethical, and legal concepts and their implications for healthcare practice.

  6. Reference how the specific Ethical Code of Conduct guides CRC, CDMS, CCM, and Addiction Professionals in addressing ethical dilemmas related to conflicts of interest, boundary issues, and confidentiality.

  7. State the responsibilities of CDMS, CRC, CCM, and Addiction Professionals in various ethical dilemmas.

  8. Discuss the implications of ethical dilemmas in social media and the potential dangers for healthcare professionals.
