This course is chapters 4-8 of the TIP titled " Enhancing Motivation for Change in Substance Use Disorder Treatment " produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), updated in 2019. This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) reflects a fundamental rethinking of the concept of motivation as a dynamic process, not a static client trait. This course covers the process from pre-contemplation, through preparation, to action for change and then maintenance of that change. Strategies are presented for counselors to assist their clients through all the stages of the motivational therapy model along with multiple tips and tools for the counselor to use in their practice. Also included are some of the adaptations of motivational counseling approaches applicable to SUD treatment programs and workforce development issues that treatment programs should address to fully integrate and sustain motivational counseling approaches. |
