Course Overview

This course will outline cultural diversity and competency, emphasizing how to apply a better understanding of cultural diversity in daily practice. It will cover cultural respect, cultural competence, health disparities, health-related experiences, complementary approaches, patient-centered care, trans-cultural communication, and skilled-centered care approaches. A link to a blueprint for individuals and healthcare organizations to implement culturally and linguistically appropriate services aimed at combating health disparities will be provided. Additionally, there is a three-question tool for healthcare professionals to use in their daily practice regarding cultural competency as it relates to children, individuals with mental health issues, seniors, and veterans.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted cultural disparities, particularly its disproportionate impact on minority communities. One contributing factor is obesity. The pandemic was managed and perceived differently across various cultures, and this topic will be addressed. Dual relationships between communities and healthcare professionals are increasingly problematic. While diversity has gained attention recently, it presents both advantages and disadvantages.
