Course Overview

Domestic violence affects many people in the United States. The term domestic violence includes child abuse, elder abuse, sexual violence, and intimate partner violence (IPV).  All healthcare professionals should be alert to the signs of each of these and know the laws governing the assessment and reporting of such abuse.
 
This class will explore the various types of domestic violence, prevention, reporting, and support and protection for those victims.
 
There is a special section specifically focused on Kentucky, the laws, and special considerations.

  1. Describe what domestic violence is and the different forms.

  2. Explain sexual violence.

  3. Present intimate partner violence and its effect on those involved.

  4. Discuss child abuse and the reporting of such.

  5. Discuss elder abuse and the many types of such abuse.

  6. Explain violence in rural areas and the specific difficulties with that.

  7. Explain the reporting of abuse and the healthcare professional's role.

  8. Describe one intervention for the prevention of domestic violence.

  9. Review Kentucky-specific laws.
