Objectives
  1. Identify the demographics and the use of services by people with spinal cord injury.

  2. Discuss the following physical/psychological changes, associated comorbidities and management required by patients status post SCI:
    • shoulder function
    • osteoporosis and fractures
    • skin and pressure sores
    • pain, pain self-efficacy and catastrophizing

  3. Explain the use of assistive technology and brain-computer interfaces as mechanisms for improving performance of critical activities of daily living for the patient status post SCI.

  4. Identify and describe the following areas of spinal cord research:
    • Promoting axon growth
    • Enhancing compensatory growth of uninjured neurons
    • Preventing scar formation
    • Replacing lost cells: stem cells and artificial scaffolds
    • Redesigning rehabilitation
    • Exploring the genetic frontier
    • Hypothermia treatment
  5. Discuss ADA information, accommodation ideas, and resources for management of employees with SCI.
