Course Description

In the first half of this course, we discuss Parkinson's Disease, specifically the signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments. In the second half of this course, we discuss Multiple Sclerosis, specifically the signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the symptoms and signs of Parkinson's Disease.

  2. Describe the process of diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's Disease, including the following treatment modalities:
    --Pharmaceutical
    --Non-pharmaceutical
    --Surgical
    --Alternative and Complementary
    --New Treatments

  3. Explain the complications and co-morbidities experienced by Parkinson's patients.

  4. Differentiate between:
    --Parkinson's Disease
    --Atypical Parkinsonism, and
    --Parkinson's Plus Syndromes

  5. Explain the prevalence, pathophysiology, and signs/symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.

  6. Describe the methods of Diagnosing MS, including laboratory and imaging findings.

  7. Identify and discuss the three types of therapy for MS:
    --disease-modifying immunotherapy
    --exacerbation management
    --symptom management
